There is an urgent need to begin transforming education systems so that they serve all learners. To continue on the current path would mean continuing to not recognize the maximum potential of all learners. Assessment for Good (AFG) is an Inclusive R&D program supported by the Advanced Education Research and Development Fund (AERDF) focused on developing asset-based formative assessment tools to eradicate the persistent gap in opportunity experienced by students, aged 8-13, in classrooms across the US. Asset-based formative assessment can be a lever for transformation, and it’s not dependent on any one technology — but it can certainly be enriched and accelerated by the exciting tools that are becoming available.

What’s needed is a mindset shift that prioritizes holistic outcomes over static metrics that fail to account for students’ unique talents, identities, circumstances and goals. Asset-based formative assessment opens the window to every child’s potential. It unlocks opportunity not only for them as individuals, but for all of us as members of a society that must tackle increasingly complex social, political and environmental challenges as we head into the 22nd century.
As part of the next phase of assessment co-design and development, Assessment for Good is aiming to establish additional funded partnerships with schools and community-based organizations that share their commitment to creating safe and welcoming learning environments. This provides support for the maximum potential of all learners, which enriches and expands their academic, emotional, social wellbeing and success. We are committed to creating a future of assessment that more accurately captures the magic of learning––namely the spark of discovery that happens when educators and learners forge engaging connections, together.
